Alex Stacoff

Dr Alex Stacoff, co-founder
of i-FAB (died 26.9.08)
Dr Alex Stacoff, one of the founder members of i-FAB, passed away on Friday 26th September 2008. This was an untimely loss to his family, his friends, and to the scientific community.
Alex’s research record speaks for itself. As a senior academic at the Institute of Biomechanics within ETH Zurich, Alex worked at one of the worlds leading Universities, and one with an enviable biomechanics heritage. He published widely in the best quality journals and tutored many students through Masters and Doctorate studies. He published 13 papers in the last 3 years alone. His collaborations across the globe and role within the International Society of Biomechanics speak to the way he was open to collaboration and to facilitating the work of others. Alex was involved in i-FAB from the outset because he strongly believed in the value of working collaboratively and supporting the work of others. His contribution is a testament to his commitment and dedication.
Beyond his research, Alex’s personal qualities will live on in the memories of those who were fortunate enough to work with him. He was the consummate professional scholar, an intellectual who worked with integrity to drive new initiatives to the benefit of all around him. He supported younger and emerging researchers with their ideas and played an important mentoring role for many people in their careers.
Having experienced some health problems in recent years, his recent publication record and enthusiasm for i-FAB provides a model of how to triumph over adversity and return with renewed energy and determination.
Above all perhaps, Alex has left us some important signposts indicating how quiet, diligent, selfless work can make a huge contribution. He was a true gentleman in every sense and we have all benefited from knowing him.
We continue to extent our thoughts and best wishes to his wife Moni and family.
